Field Trips
There's no better classroom than the farm itself. Students visit Slough Farm for hands-on field trips that bring classroom learning to life. In partnership with The Farm Institute, children explore working fields, meet the farmers tending them, and discover firsthand how food is grown through regenerative practices. These immersive visits spark curiosity, nurture environmental stewardship, and build a lasting connection to the agricultural heritage of Martha's Vineyard.
Experiential Learning
Place-based learning connects education to the local environment, community, and culture — helping students build meaningful relationships with where they live. Through direct experience, young people gain a deeper understanding of ecology, history, and shared responsibility for the land around them.
Throughout the year, we welcome school groups from preschool through high school, as well as weekly programs for kids from across the island. Our staff works closely with teachers to design experiences that expand on what's happening in the classroom — from caring for animals and harvesting vegetables to processing wool for felting and spinning, woodworking, horsemanship, cooking, and farm and garden work. Students ages 2 to 18 are invited into all parts of the farm, and yes, occasionally they get to watch a lamb come into the world. Providing quality, accessible education to young islanders is at the heart of what we do — and working alongside them in the field is often the best part of our day.
