4H

4-H is a youth development program built on the belief that kids learn best by doing. Through hands-on projects in agriculture, science, leadership, and community service, young people build confidence, develop real skills, and discover what they're capable of. Rooted in mentorship and a genuine sense of belonging, 4-H embraces each kid as an individual and helps them grow into capable, compassionate adults.

I pledge my head to clearer thinking,
My heart to greater loyalty,
My hands to larger service,
and my health to better living,
for my club, my community, my country, and my world.

Slough Farm has offered a 4H group for island youth since 2018 . 4‑H is America’s largest youth development organization—empowering nearly six million young people with the skills to lead for a lifetime.

At Slough Farm, island youth get immersed into the workings on the farm and participate in fulfilling our mission. We learn about caring for the animals, preserving and baking in the kitchen, tending the garden, creativity, teamwork and collaboration. Utilizing problem solving, trusting each other and learning respect for all living things.

The “Slough Farm Super Silos” began with a cloverbud group, 4H’s youngest participants (5-7 year olds), and is now a group for kids aged 8-12. Slough Farm has worked primarily with a core group of kids providing hands-on experiences and educational opportunities year round. Led by Slough Farms Assistant Farm Manager, Kiki Soule

Slough Farm partners with Miles Smith Farm in Loudon, NH to run the Katama Cowpokes 4h group. Since 2023, this group of kids aged 11-16 work weekly with various cows in the freezing temperatures of winter and the hot sun of summer. Out in any condition this group of aspiring farmers learn everything from halter training to herd health management working with a variety of cows ages newborn- 15 years old! They have trained cows to pull carts, work together in a yoke, be ridden with a saddle, lie down and learn voice commands. Our kids prepare all year with weekly training sessions and each taking a daily shift to feed and care for the cows. The Katama Cowpokes does their own fundraising for supplies, animal feed and of course fun with their plywood cattle fundraiser. Be sure to check out our cowpokes at the cattle show, talent show, costume contest and handler showmanship at the MV Agricultural fair!
